🎉😄A quick note before today’s content: our charting feature can now provide simple case analysis to help users interpret hexagrams. It is not a replacement for systematic study, but it can assist beginners in identifying basic structures, line relationships, movement, transformation, void, and other key points in a reading.
V. Introduction to Six Lines Divination
Part 5.3. Strength and Weakness of Hexagram Lines
When judging the strength and weakness of hexagram lines, the monthly Branch is the fundamental standard for measuring the strength of each line’s Five Element.
In general, the monthly Branch uses the five states of Prosperous, Supportive, Rest, Constraint, and Dead to evaluate the strength and weakness of the hexagram lines.

In some cases, the Twelve Stages must also be used.

For the year, day, and hour, the specific condition of a line’s Five Element is judged through the Twelve Stages. In other words, the Twelve Stages provide a more detailed classification than the five general states of Prosperous, Supportive, Rest, Constraint, and Dead.
The Monthly Branch as the Root of Strength
The monthly Branch is related to the Big Dipper. As the handle of the Dipper points east, spring comes to the world.
The monthly Branch can represent the four seasons. The four seasons symbolize the cyclical changes of temperature on earth. Additionally, they symbolize the cyclical changes in the length of day and night and the height of the sun.
These changes influence and determine many patterns of movement in the earthly environment. This is especially obvious in living beings, plants, and crops.
For this reason, the monthly Branch represents the strength and decline of things. The five states of Prosperous, Supportive, Rest, Constraint, and Dead are used to describe these conditions.
The Daily Branch as Monthly Variation
The strength and weakness of a hexagram line mainly depend on the monthly Branch.
However, the daily Branch represents the line’s strength variation within the month.
For example, even in winter, there may be a relatively warm day. Even in summer, there may be a relatively cool day.
The power of the daily Branch is weaker than the power of the monthly Branch, and its influence is not as great.
The daily Branch and monthly Branch are like the sun and the moon. Therefore, in practical application, special importance is placed on both the monthly Branch and the daily Branch.
Unless the matter being asked about is very long-term, the year Stem does not need to be heavily considered.
If the matter is very short-lived or happens within a very brief period, then the hour Stem may also need to be considered.
