🎉😄A quick note before today’s content: our charting feature can now provide simple case analysis to help users interpret hexagrams. It is not a replacement for systematic study, but it can assist beginners in identifying basic structures, line relationships, movement, transformation, void, and other key points in a reading.

Background:

The querent moved out of a rented property six months before the lease ended. She had previously paid a $600 deposit, but the landlord refused to return it. She therefore cast a hexagram to ask whether she could recover the deposit.

Hexagram obtained: Yi to Kan.

Judgment:

At first glance, this hexagram appears highly unfavorable. Two Siblings lines are active and overcome the Wife and Wealth line. Siblings C wood also coincides with the daily branch; Parents A water is active and generates the Siblings lines; and the upper Siblings D wood transforms into Parents A water, creating a returning generate.

On the surface, the Siblings lines appear extremely powerful as obstacle gods for wealth, suggesting that recovering the deposit would be difficult.

But the key is that both active Wood Siblings lines enter the tomb in H month.

1. Wife and Wealth Holds the Host: The Deposit Can Still Be Recovered

The third line, Wife and Wealth E earth, holds the host and serves as the significator god.

E earth receives support from H month. Although it is overcome by the C day, it still retains qi, so the Wealth line has not been completely damaged.

2. Two Powerful Siblings Lines Overcome Wealth, but Both Enter the Monthly Tomb

Siblings C wood and D wood are both active and overcome Wife and Wealth E earth. They are further strengthened by the daily branch, the active Parents line, and returning generation.

This reflects the landlord’s strong refusal to return the money and the substantial resistance involved in recovering it.

However, H is the tomb of Wood. Both Siblings lines therefore enter the tomb in H month.

Although the Siblings lines are powerful and active, their strength is restrained by the tomb. They can create serious obstruction and conflict, but they cannot ultimately deprive the querent of the Wealth line.

3. Siblings Transforms into Wife and Wealth: Dispute First, Money Later

The second-line Siblings C wood transforms into Wife and Wealth E earth.

Siblings normally represents competition, obstruction, and wealth depletion. Here, however, the Siblings line ultimately transforms into the Wealth significator itself.

The pattern is clear:

First the dispute over money, then the recovery of the money.

Officials and Ghosts K metal is also hidden beneath the host line. For a female querent, Officials and Ghosts can additionally represent her boyfriend. In the eventual outcome, her boyfriend did indeed become involved and repeatedly argued on her behalf.

4. Transformation into Six Clashes: An Intense Process

The transformed hexagram is Kan, an Eight Pure Hexagram and a Six Clashes hexagram.

This indicates that the process would involve significant conflict and confrontation rather than a smooth resolution.

Conclusion:

Although the hexagram initially appears highly unfavorable because two powerful Siblings lines are actively overcoming Wealth and receiving multiple forms of support, both Siblings lines enter the tomb in H month, limiting their ability to actually deprive the querent of the money.

At the same time, the second-line Siblings transforms into Wife and Wealth.

The judgment was therefore:

There would be substantial resistance and conflict, but the deposit still had a good chance of being recovered.

Feedback:

That afternoon, the querent went to demand the deposit. She had a heated argument with the landlord, and the police were called, although they did not become deeply involved.

After her boyfriend repeatedly argued the case with the landlord, the querent eventually recovered the full $600 deposit on the 23rd of that month, an IV B day.

Post-Case Review:

After the feedback confirmed that the money was recovered on an IV B day, the timing can be reviewed retrospectively.

Parents A water originally generated the Siblings Wood lines, while the A water transformed from the upper Siblings D wood also formed a returning generate.

On B day, however, A and B became compatible. A water therefore became greedy for compatibility and forgetting to generate, reducing its ability to continue supporting the Siblings lines.

At the same time, the A-B compatibility carries an Earth image, which also corresponds with the Wife and Wealth E earth finally becoming realized.

Key Principle: The Obstacle God Entering the Tomb

The most important technical point in this case is the obstacle god entering the tomb.

I Ching Divination: Complete and Restored (Zengshan Buyi, 《增删卜易》) explicitly lists one situation in which an obstacle god cannot effectively overcome the significator god:

“The obstacle god enters one of the three tombs.”

In other words, even when the obstacle god is active, entering the tomb can prevent it from fully exercising its overcoming force.

This case is a particularly clear example: the Siblings lines were not weak at all. They were powerful, active, and repeatedly supported, but both entered the monthly tomb and ultimately failed to take the Wealth away.
