Hidden Principles Ode (Chan Ao Ge Zhang) is a foundational classic in the I Ching Six Lines Divination, frequently cited in major texts such as The Complete Book of Divination (Bushi Quanshu/Bushi Daquan), I Ching Divination – Complete and Restored (Zengshan Buyi), and The Orthodox Method of I Ching Divination (Bushi Zhengzong). Composed during or after the Song–Yuan period (960–1368), it distills core techniques into twenty-five concise verses, prized for their clarity and memorability. The second half offers deeper thematic insights, expanding upon the classical system. Though the author remains unknown, Hidden Principles Ode holds enduring academic and practical value. Ideal when read alongside Zengshan Buyi and Bushi Zhengzong, it remains essential for serious students of Na Jia divination. This English edition—possibly the first—was translated by Xuan Wanyan, a Columbia University graduate from a family steeped in the I Ching tradition, making this once-esoteric system accessible to non-Chinese readers while faithfully preserving its original depth.
