II. Understanding Six Lines Divination
Part 2.3. The Upper Trigram and the Lower Trigram
The Inner Trigram represents the internal condition of a matter and symbolizes its beginning. The Outer Trigram represents the external condition of a matter and symbolizes its ending.
For example, in Tai, the lower body is Qian and the upper body is Kun, so the Tuan Commentary says: “The inner is yang and the outer is yin; the inner is strong and the outer is compliant; the inner is the noble one and the outer is the small person.” This is an example of distinguishing inner and outer from the upper and lower bodies.
Because in the Tai hexagram the lower trigram is Qian, which represents yang, and the upper trigram is Kun, which represents yin, yang is below and yin is above. This arrangement indicates that the energies of above and below can circulate and connect with one another. In the Na Jia method, Tai is also classified as a Six Compatibles hexagram.
11.Tai
The opposite of Tai is the Pi hexagram. Pi is also a Six Compatibles hexagram, but its arrangement is exactly the reverse: Qian yang is above, while Kun yin is below. The energies have each returned to their respective places and can no longer circulate between above and below. Therefore, the Tuan Commentary says: “This means Heaven and Earth do not interact, and all things have no free passage; the high and the low do not interact, and there are no states in the world. The inner is yin and the outer is yang; the inner is soft and the outer is hard; the inner is the small person and the outer is the noble one. The way of the small person is growing; the Way of the noble one is fading.”
12.Pi
In Chinese culture, many common idioms come from the Yijing (I Ching). One well known example is When Pi reaches its limit, Tai comes (否极泰来,pi ji tai lai), which comes from the contrast between Pi and Tai. It means that when things have become bad to the utmost extreme, the energy will begin to reverse, and better conditions will arrive. So when one is going through a difficult period, this phrase can serve as a reminder: if you hold on a little longer, better days may already be on the way.
Of course, when better days do arrive, one should not become complacent or carried away. It is still important to remain modest and maintain a humble attitude, so that favorable circumstances can continue for longer rather than quickly turning again.

Time of divination: March 13, 2026, at 8:43 PM.
Stem and branch time: III G year, VIII D month, III L day (void: G and H), V L hour.
A female querent asked about reconciliation. The background was that she suspected her ex-boyfriend had a third party, although he did not admit it. At the moment of casting the hexagram, she was full of doubt about this matter. At the same time she asked whether the two of them could reconcile. She obtained Qian to Tong Ren.
Judgment: In this hexagram, the first line, the fourth line, the fifth line, which was the host line, and the top line were all active. Therefore, this was a hexagram with an unusually large number of active lines.
Many active lines indicate upheaval in the matter: Because there were too many changes in the hexagram, the matter was judged to be highly turbulent. When many lines are active at once, it is often difficult to grasp a single clear main thread. This itself shows that the emotional entanglement was extremely complicated and full of twists and reversals. In “I Ching Divination: Complete and Restored” (Zengshan Buyi, 《增删卜易》), this falls under the discussion of “chaotic movement of the six lines.”Cases of this kind are precisely where many readers misjudge the hexagram if they focus only on one line or one seemingly favorable sign. For a fuller treatment of how to read these structures, including “chaotic movement of the six lines” and “solitary activity,” see my translation of Zengshan Buyi.
In relationship divination, officials and ghosts represent the man, while wife and wealth represent a woman. This clearly showed that there was indeed another romantic opportunity, ambiguous involvement, or female entanglement around the man.
Why the matter was so difficult to judge cleanly: On the one hand, the hexagram was full of movement, which already showed instability and repeated reversals. On the other hand, the querent was asking about reconciliation while at the same time carrying strong suspicion about another woman. This meant that the emotional question itself was not pure and simple. Instead, it had already become mixed together with distrust, concealment, and outside interference. Therefore, even if reconciliation were to occur, it would not easily be a clean or stable reconciliation.
The transformed hexagram being Tong Ren, a returning soul hexagram, also suggested that the two might ultimately come back together. In relationship matters, a returning soul hexagram often points to something returning to its former place. However, in this case, because the hexagram also showed chaotic movement and hidden romantic entanglement, this return did not indicate a stable resolution. Instead, it showed only that reconciliation remained possible.
Conclusion: This hexagram showed that reconciliation was possible, but not in a clean or stable way. It would be unlikely to resolve the underlying emotional knot.
Afterward, she continued casting many more hexagrams about the matter.
In ancient times, some would determine the time of fulfillment based on a solitary static line. For example, in this hexagram, the C Wood is the solitary static line. In this hexagram, Earth represents descendants. However, even so, I dared not make a definitive judgment.”
That is exactly why cases of this kind require more than mechanical line reading. Instead, they require careful attention to the significator, the host line, the chain of generation and overcoming, and the balance between movement and stillness. Readers who want to study this type of structure more systematically can find a fuller discussion in my translation of Zengshan Buyi.

II. Understanding Six Lines Divination
Part 1. Reading the Chart Layout
Part 2. Composition of Hexagram Symbols
Notably, this is the general convention in the Zhouyi (the I Ching tradition passed down since the Zhou Dynasty).
When the Second Line is a yang line, counting from the bottom upward, and the same applies below, it is called Nine-Two; when it is a yin line, it is called Six-Two.
When the Third Line is a yang line, it is called Nine-Three; when it is a yin line, it is called Six-Three.
When the Fourth Line is a yang line, it is called Nine-Four; when it is a yin line, it is called Six-Four.
When the Fifth Line is a yang line, it is called Nine-Five; when it is a yin line, it is called Six-Five.
When the Top Line is a yang line, it is called Top-Nine; when it is a yin line, it is called Top-Six.
As shown below in the Bi Hexagram.
In the Zhouyi, nine and six respectively represent yang lines and yin lines.Where there is an initial point, there must also be an end point. Thus the concept of time arises. Where there is above, there must also be below, and thus the concept of space arises. This concept is extremely important. It directly relates to the later methods of judging auspiciousness and inauspiciousness.
As shown below in the Qian Hexagram:
Time of divination: February 10, 2023.
Stem and branch time: the X D year, the I C month, the VI M day (void: E and F).
When the Kun Hexagram represents space, the line position represents time, and the Top Line is the endpoint.
When the Kun Hexagram represents the patient, this means the person is about to die.
These points will all be explained gradually later on.
We will explain the exact procedure later, so there is no need to worry for now.

Time of divination: November 5, 2023, at 10:17 AM.
Stem and branch time: X D year, IX L month, IV D day, II F hour (void: L and M).
A man asked whether he could reconcile with his girlfriend. He obtained Jie to Sui.
Judgment: In judging reconciliation, one must first determine the significator clearly. When a man asks about reconciliation with his former girlfriend, the wife and wealth line is taken as the significator. In this hexagram, the wife and wealth line, IV F fire, happened to hold the host position. In addition, it received generation from the daily branch, IV D day, so the significator was relatively prosperous. If one looked only at this point, it would seem to be an auspicious sign.
A favorable appearance that could easily mislead the judgment: The primary hexagram was 60.Jie, which is a Six Compatibles hexagram. This showed that during this period there was still some entanglement and lingering connection between the two sides. Moreover, the corresponding line originally formed compatibility with the host line. This could also easily give the impression that reconciliation was still possible.
The retreating source god: In the hexagram, the descendants line, IV D wood, in the second line was active and transformed into descendants VII C wood. The descendants line was the source god of the wife and wealth line, because wood generates fire. However, D wood transforming into C wood constituted retreating transformation. This meant that the source god itself was weakening. So the force that generated and supported the significator was retreating. In hexagram interpretation, this was an inauspicious sign. It showed that the power supporting reconciliation was declining rather than strengthening.
The corresponding line transformed and clashed back: The corresponding line representing the other party was the parents line, V J metal. Although it originally formed compatibility with the host line, it was active and transformed into siblings IV M water. This transformed M water directly clashed the host line wife and wealth line, F fire, because M and F clash. This was a very unfavorable sign.
Temperament and ongoing entanglement: The primary hexagram being a Six Compatibles hexagram showed that the two sides still had some ties and involvement during that period. However, the first line aligned with Vermilion Bird, which mainly signifies disputes and verbal friction, while the fourth line aligned with White Tiger and formed an opposing structure. This suggested that the two were not aligned in values. As a result, they were prone to conflict in everyday interaction.
Conclusion: Although the hexagram showed some apparently favorable signs, including the wife and wealth line holding the host position, receiving support from the day, and the primary hexagram being a Six Compatibles hexagram, these signs were not enough to determine success. The real key lay in the retreating source god. Additionally, the corresponding line transformed out M water to clash the host line F fire, breaking open the original compatibility. Therefore, the final judgment was that the two would not reconcile.
Feedback: The querent later confirmed that it did not succeed, and the two ultimately did not reconcile.

A female querent asked about an exam and wanted to know whether her score could exceed 270. She obtained Yu to 15.Qian.
Judgment: In judging academic results, the parents line, A water, hidden in the first line, is taken as the significator. Although the significator was hidden, it received monthly compatibility and daily coincide. A water encountered the B month in compatibility, and it was also exactly on the I A day when A was at value. Therefore, its force was extremely strong.

Time of divination: July 29, 2024, at 4:03 PM.
Stem and branch time: I E year, VIII H month, I G day (void: E and F).
A female querent asked whether her interview the next day would succeed. She obtained 47.Kun to Kan.
Judgment: Obtaining a Six Compatibles hexagram transforming into a Six Clashes hexagram is usually inauspicious. If it were Six Clashes transforming into Six Compatibles, it would usually indicate misfortune first and auspiciousness later. In this case, obtaining the Six Compatibles hexagram 47.Kun transforming into Kan, a Six Clashes hexagram, already basically indicated that the interview would not succeed.
A factor that could easily lead to misjudgment: In the hexagram, there appeared the situation of the corresponding line transforming into return generation, and the corresponding line also generated the host line. In hexagram interpretation, the corresponding line represents the interviewing company. Meanwhile, the host line represents the job seeker, that is, the querent. This can easily cause many people to mistakenly think that the interview would succeed. However, in the H monthly branch and on the G day, the descendants line, M water, was in the state of rest and constraint. So even though the siblings line transformed into return generation, its force was still not sufficient to generate and prosper the host line wife and wealth line.
The reason for failure: Although the company had interest, the host line representing the querent herself was not supported by either the daily branch or the monthly branch. Wood entered the tomb in the monthly branch H, and the daily branch G drained wood. Thus, wood was in the state of rest and constraint, with its own strength being too weak. More importantly, in this hexagram the wife and wealth line held the host position. This suggested that the key issue in the matter lay in money or salary.
Conclusion: Although the company showed goodwill toward the querent, the interview would still not succeed. The Six Compatibles hexagram transforming into a Six Clashes hexagram already indicated an unfavorable outcome, and the host line was also too weak. Moreover, with the wife and wealth line holding the host position, the core issue pointed to compensation.
Feedback: The final feedback confirmed exactly this. The two sides had too great a gap in salary expectations, and the interview ultimately did not succeed.

Time of divination: January 23, 2026, at 12:45 PM.
Stem and branch time: II F year, VI B month, IV K day, III G hour (void E and F).
A divination was made to predict the weather conditions for the weekend, namely the L day and the M day. The hexagram obtained was 15. Qian to 2. Kun.
Judgment: In this hexagram, the descendants line, M water, which represents the clear weather, holds the host position. Although it is overcome by the monthly branch, B month, it receives generation from the daily branch, K day. In weather divination, the descendants line usually represents clear weather.
The active line revealing the weather image: In the hexagram, the siblings line, J metal, which represents wind and clouds, is active. It goes on to generate and support the host line descendants M water. This movement shows extremely good weather. Therefore, it indicates a clear sky without clouds.
The specific time when the wind would rise: In addition to generating and supporting clear weather, the activity of the siblings line also indicates that there would be wind. Because it was J metal that was active, the judgment was that the wind would begin to rise in the J hour.
Conclusion: Based on the overall hexagram image and the generation and overcoming relationships of the active line, the weather for the weekend was judged to be clear with wind. This judgment applies especially to the L day and the M day. The weather on the M day would be especially good.
Feedback: This hexagram was verified.
Notes: Why Weather Divination Is Especially Suitable for Beginners
Weather prediction is actually one of the most suitable topics for beginners to practice in I Ching divination. The reason is simple: weather matters usually have a short fulfillment period. They are often verified within a few hours, one day, or several days. Because of this, they are especially useful for training one’s grasp of the Six Relationships, prosperous and declining states, generation and overcoming, and activity and stillness.
Compared with matters such as relationships, career, or wealth, where the feedback cycle is much longer, weather hexagrams produce results more quickly and are easier to verify directly. For beginners, this kind of topic is especially helpful. One can know fairly quickly whether the judgment was correct, which is useful for building experience and improving accuracy through repeated practice.
Common Correspondences of the Six Relationships in Weather Prediction
In weather divination, different Six Relationships often correspond to different weather images.
Parents line: usually represents cloudy weather, rain, snow, clouds, and mist.
Descendants line: usually represents clear weather, sunlight, and a cloudless sky.
Wife and wealth line: also usually represents clear weather, bright skies, and warm sunshine.
Officials and ghosts line: usually represents thunder, lightning, and dark weather.
Siblings line: usually represents strong wind, or wind and clouds appearing together.
Therefore, when divining the weather, one must first look at the weather image represented by the Six Relationship. Then, judge comprehensively according to its prosperous or declining state, whether it is active, and the generation and overcoming relationships among the Five Elements.
The Core Method of Choosing the Significator in Weather Divination
The core judgment in weather hexagrams is still mainly based on the Six Relationships.
To judge whether there will be rain, one usually focuses on the parents line. If the parents line is prosperous and active, it often indicates rain. If the parents line is prosperous and also receives generation, the rainfall is usually heavier. Furthermore, if the parents line is weak or is overcome, then even if there is rain, the amount is usually not great.
To judge clear weather, one usually focuses on the descendants line or the wife and wealth line. If the descendants line or wife and wealth line is prosperous and active, it often indicates that the weather will clear. If the wife and wealth line is prosperous, it also often indicates bright sunshine.
To judge thunder and lightning, one usually focuses on the officials and ghosts line. In particular, if the officials and ghosts line is active, it often corresponds to thunder, dark skies, or sudden weather changes.
To judge wind, one usually focuses on the siblings line. If the siblings line is active, it usually indicates wind. If the siblings line is prosperous, the wind is usually stronger. If it is in rest or constraint, it usually indicates only a light wind.
If there are no active lines in the hexagram, then special attention should be given to the host line. The host line often represents the querent’s location, and its state can also help in judging the weather there.
What Weather Hexagrams Are Best for Training
The focus of weather hexagram interpretation is usually not on making the six gods coordination overly complex. Instead, it is on whether the Six Relationships have been matched accurately to the correct weather images. Also, it matters whether prosperous and declining states have been judged properly, and whether the generation and overcoming relationships of the Five Elements are clear.
In other words, weather hexagrams are especially suitable for beginners to train their fundamentals. One does not need to pursue overly complicated image taking at the start. Instead, one should first firmly grasp the most basic judgments. Know which line governs rain, sunshine, wind, and thunder. Then, see whether they are prosperous or declining, active or static, generated or overcome. If these basics are judged correctly, then the final conclusion is often already quite close to the actual outcome.
Weather Hexagrams Must Also Be Read Together with the Real Environment
Of course, weather hexagrams cannot be judged mechanically apart from the real environment. They must also be understood together with the actual season and geographic background.
For example, when the parents line is active, in summer it more easily corresponds to rainfall or heavy rain. In winter it may correspond to snowfall. The climate characteristics of different regions can also affect the final image. So although weather hexagrams are relatively clear in structure, they still require the diviner to judge flexibly in light of real conditions rather than apply formulas rigidly.
Why Weather Divination Still Has Practical Value Today
Although modern society already has weather forecasts, weather forecasts are after all public information directed toward relatively broad areas. For local weather, short term changes, or particular temporary situations, the information is not always so detailed. Nor is it always easy to find the exact forecast one needs right away.
In such cases, if one simply wants to know quickly whether it will rain, whether wind will rise, or whether the sky will clear during a certain period, then Six Lines weather divination is still a very practical method. Weather matters also verify quickly and give direct feedback. So, in short term prediction they are often highly accurate.
Final Note
From the perspective of learning, weather hexagrams are excellent practice material. Their feedback is fast, their structure is clear, and their verification is direct. This makes them especially suitable for beginners to train the basic abilities of taking images from the Six Relationships, judging prosperous and declining states, and understanding generation and overcoming among the Five Elements.
From the perspective of practical use, weather hexagrams have not lost their value simply because modern weather forecasts exist. On the contrary, in some specific, immediate, and local situations, they remain a very efficient and practical method of judgment.

A company was competing for a project. The querent wanted to know whether it would be possible to push hard and change the bidding score from second place to first. In addition, the querent also wanted to know whether, if this failed, it would cause harm to the company. For example, they wondered if there could be cancellation of the bid award qualification or even loss of bidding eligibility. The hexagram obtained was Tai to Ji Ji.
Judgment: In the hexagram, the siblings line, E earth, holds the host position, presenting the image of competition and contending for the bid. In the hexagram, the parents line, F fire, which represents documents and scores, was prosperous and supportive. However, it was in hidden concealment. At the same time, the officials and ghosts line, C wood, had entered the tomb on the daily branch, H earth. This shows that the official action had already ended. Both pieces of information correspond to the situation in which the result had already been determined. However, it had not yet been officially announced.
Official suppression and the competitor: In the hexagram, the officials and ghosts line, C wood, was active. Once the officials and ghosts line was active, it overcame the siblings lines representing the querent and the competitor, namely E earth and B earth. This shows a state of suppression and competition.
The competitor would ultimately win the bid: Although the officials and ghosts line, C wood, was active and overcame the siblings line, B earth, it transformed into the siblings line, B earth. Because it transformed into the same category, it could no longer overcome the transformed siblings line, B earth.
The querent’s result: The host line, the siblings line, E earth, representing the querent, remained static in the hexagram and was in a state of being overcome. This shows that the querent had no connection with taking first place this time.
Conclusion: According to the hexagram, the querent’s attempt to change the score from second place to first would not succeed. Since the host line remained static and was being overcome, there was no chance of taking the top position. The final winning result would belong to another competitor, shown by the siblings line, B earth, draining the parents line, F fire.
Feedback: As the hexagram indicated, the querent’s company ultimately did not win the bid.

Stem and branch time: II F year, VI B month, VIII B day (void: E and F).
A querent asked when her father’s health would recover. The background was that her father had been hospitalized after an accident. Although he had undergone several surgeries, there had been no obvious improvement. She wanted to know whether, after this surgery, he could fully recover. She obtained Feng to Da Zhuang.
Judgment: In judging the illness of one’s father, the parents line is taken as the significator. In this hexagram, the parents line, J metal, in the fifth line is taken as the significator. This line receives generation from both the monthly branch, B earth, and the daily branch, B earth. It is in the states of prosperous and supportive. This shows that the father’s own bodily foundation and underlying constitution were still fairly good.
The nature of the illness: In the hexagram, the officials and ghosts line, B earth, in the second line is active and generates the significator, with earth generating metal. Officials and ghosts represent illness, and when it is active and generates the body, this shows that the illness was indeed rather serious at present. But the turning point lay in the fact that the officials and ghosts line, B earth, was active and transformed into the descendants line, C wood, forming return overcoming. The descendants line represents medicine and the force that resolves illness, and C wood in turn overcomes B earth. Since the illness was overcome by the force that resolves it, it was judged that recovery would ultimately be possible.
Urgent illness and the Six Clashes hexagram: The father’s hospitalization due to an accident belonged to an urgent illness. For urgent illness, encountering a Six Clashes hexagram indicates recovery. But for a chronic illness, encountering a Six Clashes hexagram is inauspicious.
Timing of recovery: Although the transformed descendants line, C wood, represented the force that resolves the illness, in the B month and on the B day it was overcome by both the monthly and the daily branches. Its present strength was weak, which shows that the power of recovery was relatively weak at the beginning, and that a longer period of time would be needed before full recovery could occur.

Time of divination: March 1, 2025, at 7:20 PM. Stem and branch time: II F year, V C month, VI F day (void: L and M).
A woman asked about a man with whom she was in an ambiguous relationship, and wanted to know what he truly thought of her. She obtained Kun to Xian.
Judgment: In judging this kind of relationship hexagram, one usually needs to first determine the gender in order to identify the significator. One should also examine the relationship between the host line and the corresponding line: the host line represents oneself, and the corresponding line represents the other party. If the host and corresponding lines generate each other, it is favorable.
The querent’s state: The querent’s significator, the wife and wealth line, C wood, in the first line, holds the host position, and aligns with Soaring Snake. Soaring Snake often represents sensitivity and false alarm, which shows that the woman was actually not emotionally steady inside. In relationship matters, the wife and wealth line represents giving and emotional investment. It generates and supports the significator officials and ghosts line, G fire, in the third line.
The other party’s state: The man’s thoughts need to be judged together through the corresponding line and the officials and ghosts line.
He had goodwill, but feared constraint, so his attitude was avoidant: The corresponding line is in the fourth line, where the descendants line, M water, aligns with Azure Loong.
At the same time, the hexagram shows L and M as void in the cycle, and the corresponding line, M water, is exactly in void. This means that the man’s attitude at that time was insubstantial, avoidant, or withdrawn.
But when this is considered together with the third line officials and ghosts line, G fire, which is prosperous and supportive, aligns with Black Tortoise, and is active, it shows that the man did have feelings for the woman and liked the pleasant and happy feeling of being with her. Because it aligns with Black Tortoise, he kept his thoughts hidden and unspoken, maintaining the ambiguity.
He may have felt there was competition, or may have regarded her only as a friend for the time being: The third line officials and ghosts line, G fire, was active and transformed into the siblings line, J metal.
He was also facing external pressure: In the hexagram, the second line parents line, E earth, aligns with White Tiger and is active, transforming into the officials and ghosts line, G fire.
In relationship matters, the parents line mainly signifies constraint and pressure, though it can also signify documents such as a marriage certificate. In this case, however, it more likely signified pressure.
Most likely, his parents hoped he would find a stable partner and may have felt that the woman did not quite fit that expectation, or else he was very busy with work and had no time.
Conclusion: The man was currently in a state of hesitation and avoidance, with the corresponding line being void in the cycle. He feared constraint and could not bring himself to act, so he would not take the initiative to confess his feelings, nor would he bring up future progress. However, the primary hexagram was 47.Kun, which is a Six Compatibles hexagram. Six Compatibles means that the two had fate connections and entanglement. If the woman took initiative and acted, the two of them could in fact come together.
Feedback: After the prediction and guidance, the two did indeed end up together.
